Coke Studio Tamil drops Carnatic music maestro Sanjay Subrahmanyan’s ‘Urudhi’
Chennai, May 24 (PTI): Carnatic music world’s rockstar Sanjay Subrahmanyan took to Twitter on Wednesday morning to drop his most unlikely song to date Urudhi’ for Coke Studio Tamil.
“The wait is over as Urudhi from Coke Studio dropped today. It has been an emotional ride for me and the entire team that has contributed. Thanks so much for the spontaneous and overwhelming response all around,” he tweeted this morning.
The song sees him singing with Arifullah Shah, a practicing fakir trained in Naagoor style Tamil Sufi music.
Back in January end too, Subrahmayan took to Twitter to tell the world about his collaboration with Coke Studio Tamil. He said although his father (and music purists like him) are wondering Dei, what is this Coca Cola thing?’, he was really looking forward to this detour in his musical journey.
“For me, Sean Roldan (music composer) is a mature musical mind, and I don’t have to think twice when he comes up with a proposal. I immediately said yes and we started brainstorming once I got back from tour (in US in October 2022). This was a really new and fulfilling experience for me…
The whole song was to be filmed and recorded live as we performed in a specially designed set at a film studio in the heart of Kollywood! It was a fairly long day of filming
. The morning started off with interviews, some still photo shoots. Post lunch we had a number of rehearsals.
Finally, we started shooting as the (28-member) ensemble performed and recorded live both the audio and video. It was a throwback to the old days of film music when the entire troupe performed and recorded live For me this was totally new, but I felt young and energetic and came away thinking, Even though I might have been the oldest person on set, I wouldn’t mind more of this!’,” he had tweeted on January 24.
Accompanied by a full-fledged orchestra (Sunshine Orchestra) and Punya Srinivas on Veena, Subrahmanyan and Shah explore in Urudhi’ how faith holds great importance in people’s lives and is an integral part of different cultures and sub-cultures.
