SP College organises one day programme on Fishery Resource Management

SRINAGAR, MAY 31: One day workshop on Fishery Resource Management in J&K under National Technology Day and ‘Mission LiFE’ was today held at Sri Pratap College, Srinagar

The programme was organised by PG Department of Environmental Science of the College.

 The principal SP college, Prof. (Dr.) Gh Jeelani Qurashi in his address emphasised on the scientific management of the fishery resources for a better economic and biological security and encouraged students to take up new ventures on scientific lines for prosperity.

Dr. Qazi Ashiq Hussain, the organising secretary of the programme, introduced the subject matter and the resource person to the audience. 

The resource person for the programme was Prof. (Dr.) Farooz Ahmad Bhat, Dean Faculty of Fisheries SKUAST-K, who gave detailed lecture on present fish diversity, distribution, production and conservation in Jammu & Kashmir. 

The expert speaker talked at length about the taxonomic status and species distribution of fishes across Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh. He explained the traditional and modern fish culturing techniques and technologies to the students. 

The learned speaker gave details about the economic potential of the fishery sector and the ways and means to enhance the same. He highlighted the challenges faced by the fishery sector and suggested measures for correcting the same.

The expert speaker gave detailed account of the exotic and alien fishes including the alligator gar (Atractosteus spatula) which are now becoming a new threat to our fragile aquatic ecosystems. 

The vote of thanks on the occasion was presented by Prof. Shahid Ahmad Wani and the programme was moderated by Dr. Mansha Nisar.
