NIT Srinagar celebrates World Bicycle Day
Registrar flagged off cycle rally, appreciated SSCL initiative
Srinagar, June 04: Under the theme of India’s G20 presidency, the Department of Physical Education, National Institute of Technology (NIT) Srinagar on Sunday celebrated World Bicycle Day and more than 100 participants, including teaching, non-teaching staff, and students took part in the mega rally.
The bicyclerally was flagged off by Registrar NIT Srinagar, Prof. Syed Kaiser Bukhari, while Prof. Abdul Liman (DSW), Dr. Shahid Saleem and other staff were present on the occasion. The rally covered a distance around the campus.
On the occasion, Prof. Kaiser Bukhari said World Bicycle Day provides an opportunity to promote the bicycle as a simple, affordable, and environmentally friendly means of transportation that can contribute to a healthier and more sustainable future.
He said the day was officially declared by the United Nations General Assembly in April 2018.
Prof. Bukhari also highlighted the benefits of cycling, such as improving health and well-being, reducing air pollution and carbon emissions. This day serves as a platform for raising awareness about the multiple benefits of cycling and advocating for better infrastructure and policies that support bicycle-friendly cities and towns, he said.
Registrar NIT, Prof. Bukhari appreciated the initiatives of Srinagar Smart City Limited (SSCL) in which cycle tracks are being made in the city to promote sustainable transportation. Most students can benefit from these initiatives for the benefit of their health and wellbeing.
Dean Students Welfare, Prof. Abdul Liman congratulated all candidates for participating in the event. This day aims to promote the benefits of cycling and raise awareness about the multiple societal and environmental advantages of using bicycles for transportation, recreation, and sports, he said.
On the occasion, Dr. Srinibash Mishra, SAS Coordinator expressed his gratitude to NIT Srinagar administration for supporting such initiatives on the campus.
