One-Day Workshop on ArcGIS Applications in Higher Education organized by the Department of Environmental Sciences, University of Jammu

JAMMU, June 14: Department of Environmental Sciences in collaboration with ESRI India and Innovative Systel (Authorized Partner of ESRI India) organized a one-day workshop on ArcGIS Applications in Higher Education: Emerging Trends.

The purpose of the workshop was to acquaint the participants with the importance and applicationsof Geographical information system (GIS) in biological and earth sciences, the use of ArcGIS tools to visualize real-world features, explore spatial data and analyze maps to communicate information and make decisions. Prof. Piyush Malaviya, Head, Department of Environmental Sciences and Convener of the workshop, in his inaugural remarks, said that GIS has become an essential tool for planning, resource management and decision-making in various sectors andthe ability of GIS to store, retrieve, and analyzemodels and map spatial data has enhanced its applications. He further said that the workshop will help the participants in finding out possible applications of GIS tools in their respective research and teaching activities.The Resource Persons included Ms. Aprajita Singh, and Mr. MalleshBalinafrom ESRI India and Mr. Rominder Bedi, from Innovative Systel. Important topics like trends in the geospatial industry,education geo hub for smart campus operation,ArcGIS Pro, deep learning, data engineering, drone data management, ArcGIS enterprise, story maps, survey 123, dashboard, etc.,were discussed during the workshop. Later, the participants of the workshop interacted with the resource persons.

The workshop was organized in hybrid mode wherein around 100 participants from various educational institutes across the country participated. Among these, around 60 participants joined the workshop through online mode.Dr. Deepika Slathia, organizing secretary of the workshop proposed the formal vote of thanks and the workshop proceedings were conducted by Ms. Shivali Sharma.Others who attended the workshop included Dr. Rakesh Kumar Atri, Dr. Meenakshi Khajuria,Dr. Madhulika Bhagat, faculty members, and research scholars and studentsfrom variousdepartments of the University.
