TLSC organises Legal Awareness programme at Gurez

BANDIPORA, July 27: Tehsil Legal Services Committee (TLSC), Gurez in collaboration with Govt Degree College Gurez on Thursday organized a Legal awareness programme on Concepts & Activities of Legal Aid Clinics, Legal Literacy Clubs and role of Para Legal Volunteers at Govt Degree College Gurez.

The programme was organised under the supervision of Chairman District Legal Services Authority (Pr. Distt & Sessions Judge) Bandipora, Amit Sharma. Chairperson, Tehsil Legal Services Committee (Munsiff/ JMIC) Gurez, Shayesta Nazir was also present on the occasion.

Among others the programme was attended by Principal GDC Gurez, Farooq Ahmad Mir; faculty members GDC Gurez, students and other officials.

The prime goal behind organizing the said awareness programme was to generate awareness among the masses about the concept and activities done by Legal Aid Clinics, Legal Literacy Clubs and roles played by Para Legal Volunteers.

Shayesta Nazir on the occasion highlighted the National Legal Services Authority (Legal Aid Clinics) Scheme, 2010. She spoke on the objective of the Scheme and informed how to provide legal services to the poor, marginalized and weaker sections of the society, especially to the people living in faraway places including the places with geographical barriers, away from the seats of justice and the offices of the legal services institutions.

She further informed how to provide inexpensive local machinery for rendering legal services of basic nature like legal advice, drafting of petitions, notices, replies, applications and other documents of legal importance.

Advocate Javaid Iqbal spoke on the activities of the Legal Literacy Clubs which includes holding of Legal Awareness discourses for students of the school/college, organizing of debates, discussions, essay competitions, poetry/short competitions and painting/cartoon drawing competitions on the issues pertaining to Legal Literacy & Awareness on Legal Services Day, Constitution Day, Annual Day, besides Children’s Day.

He also underscored the role and duties of Para Legal Volunteers (PLVs) on how they impart awareness on laws and the legal system. He also threw light on PLVs acting as intermediaries bridging the gap between the common people and the Legal Services Institutions to remove impediments in access to justice and trained counsel who amicably settle the dispute between the parties at the source itself and save the trouble of the affected persons.

Students and other participants on the occasion expressed their gratitude to TLSC Gurez for organizing the programme and requested them to continue with such awareness programmes in the near future.
