District Wushu Championship concludes in Bandipora

SRINAGAR, August 8:  The District Wushu Association Bandipora today concluded Government Higher Secondary School Ajas Bandipora here today.

The two-day event witnessed participation of as many as 330 participants including a good number of female athletes. The organized by District Wushu Association of Bandipora in collaboration with J&K Sports Council received a good support from the District Administration Bandipora.

The participating athletes representing different schools and clubs of district Bandipora competed in different categories and on the concluding day all the meritorious participants were felicitated.  The 24 gold and silver medals each, besides bronze medals, were distributed among the first, second and third position holders respectively.

The Syed Jaffar-u-Din Bukhari Memorial Islamic Public School, Ajas bagged the overall 1st position securing 9 gold medals, while Government Higher Secondary School, Ajas with 3 gold medals was placed second in the championship.

The prospective athletes were scouted during the championship and selected for the upcoming Union Territory Level Wushu Championship-2023 scheduled to be held later this year.

Many eminent personalities and dignitaries from the district attended the closing ceremony. The chief guest of the event was Major Abhinav Joshi from 13RR Delta Company. He was flanked by Nazir Ahmad Wani, Principal Government Higher Secondary School, Ajas as guest of honour along with Padmashree awardee Fasil Ali Dar and other notable personalities and guests.

While speaking on the occasion, the chief guest informed that the Wushu as a sport has gained global popularity as a sport. Applauding the organizers for the promotion and development of Wushu in the district, Major Abhinav said that the premier sporting body is committed to nurturing young talent and fostering a culture of sportsmanship.

He said that various events, championships, and training programs to propel the growth of sports should be held on a regular basis in the district Bandipora which abounds for immense sports talent. The guest of honour, Nazir Wani welcomed the decision of holding the championship in Ajas.

Both the guest equivocally congratulated the organizers for the successful event and emphasized that sports is an antidote to curb the drug menace in the district.

The Padmashree awardee Fasil Dar also congratulated the organizers for the successful conduct of the event and stressed for more such events in the district to bring the hidden talent to fore.

Meanwhile, events in the disciplines of Tug of War, Kabaddi, Carrom and Kho-Kho were organized in GHSSS Panthal, Reasi in which more than 130 students including boys and girls participated in the day long competition. The events were part of the Independence Day Week celebrations.
