GENDER SENSITIZATION WORKSHOP SERIES BEGINS AT JAMMU UNIVERSITY 

Centre for Women’s Studies, JU organizes Gender Sensitization Workshop for the Students and Scholars of Department of Remote Sensing & GIS, University of Jammu.

Jammu, August 22: Under the Gender Sensitization Workshop Series 2023-24, the Centre for Women’s Studies today organized the 1st workshop in collaboration with department of Remote Sensing & GIS for their scholars and P.G. students.  Dr. Hema Gandotra, Associate Professor, Department of Sociology, University of Jammu was the resource person.  This workshop was planned under the able guidance and vision of Prof. Vishav Raksha, Director, Centre for Women’s Studies.  

Dr. Hema Gandotra the key resource person for the workshop spoke about the concept of gender, how it is seen and perceived in our day today life. She averred that how Patriarchy as an ideology has created unequal power structures in the form of power differences and inequality in various spheres. She also gave detailed presentation on how gender is constructed and ideas about masculinity and femininity are built and perceived in the society by quoting few examples from the works of Kamla Bhasin and Vibhuti Patel. Further she shared her personal experiences, while defining some of the stereotypical roles and expectations as male and female in the patriarchal society. She engaged the students in different activities wherein she explained how gendering take place and stereotypical notions are constructed.

Prof. A.S. Jasrotia Head, Department of Remote Sensing & GIS spoke about the importance of this workshop and appreciated the efforts of the Centre. Further he shared his personal experiences and stressed on the need for mutual respect irrespective of gender. He also suggested the students to question the disparities that exist in the society.

Prof. Vishav Raksha in her closing remarks highlighted the working of the Centre and appreciated the Department for accepting and acknowledging the importance of this workshop. She also deliberated on the importance of gender sensitization for the young students as they are the change makers of the society. She emphasized on the importance of the gender sensitivity in order to have an egalitarian and gender just society.

The participants comprising of students, scholars and teachers of Department of Remote Sensing and GIS attended the workshop who very actively and enthusiastically took part in the interaction that followed the presentation. The participants raised many queries on issues like equality, Gender neutrality, Gender identity, Gender Stereotypes etc and were answered to their satisfaction by the Resource person and the Director, CWS. The workshop was conducted and coordinated by Dr. Saranjit Kaur and the formal vote of thanks was presented by Mrs. Kunzang Angmo both faculty members, Centre for Women’s Studies.  Dr. Ajay.K.Taloor, faculty Department of Remote Sensing and GIS coordinated and looked after the digital modalities of the workshop.
