Centre for Women’s Studies, JU organizes Gender Sensitization Workshop for the Students and Scholars of the Department of Sociology.
Jammu, Oct 06- The Centre for Women’s Studies, University of Jammu organized 4th workshop under ongoing series for the students and scholars of the Department of Sociology on Friday, 6th October, 2023. Dr. Sonia Aneja, Faculty, Department of Law, University of Jammu was the resource person.
At the very outset Prof. Vishav Raksha, Head, Department of Sociology and Director, Centre for Women’s Studies after formally welcoming all the participants, and explained the rationale behind the conduct of such workshops. In her address she said that these workshops are an attempt to inculcate the gender sensitivity among the students to make them gender sensitive human beings. While explaining the importance of the sensitization workshops further she explained that through these workshops, the Centre has created a team of Gender experts within the University from different departments who are very effectively supporting and helping the initiative of sensitizing the students within and outside the Campus. She also stressed that such workshops are a medium to sensitize the individuals who respect every gender and make an effort to go beyond binaries.
Dr. Sonia Aneja, the key resource person for the workshop, spoke about the Legal provisions for women’s safety and explained the importance of Gender and Law. In her address, she mentioned how the status of the women since time immemorial has remained secondary, and even in the contemporary society the situation is no better as women lack legal literacy. Dr. Aneja also spoke about the Constitutional Provisions under various Articles like 14,15,16,19 etc. She also shared few landmark Case-Studies related to Sexual Harassment, Acid Attacks, Land Inheritance, and Rape. She further stressed upon the importance of Gender sensitization through education, the stringent implementation of laws and rational makeover of stereotypical mindset.
Faculty members, Research Scholars and Students of Department of Sociology very actively participated in the workshop and shared their personal experiences and raised many queries on the issues like Women Empowerment, Trans-gender Identity, Dowry, etc. which were answered to their satisfaction by the resource person as well as the Director, CWS. The workshop was conducted and coordinated by Dr. Saranjit Kaur, and the formal vote of thanks was presented by Ms. Kunzang Angmo both Faculty members, Centre for Women’s Studies. The Dr. Gopal Sharma, faculty, Department of Sociology looked after the digital modalities of the workshop.
