Krishi Vigyan Kendra Samba conducts successful demonstrations on Millets

SAMBA, November 24: Krishi Vigyan Kendra Samba, under the leadership of Prof. B. N. Tripathi, Vice Chancellor, Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology, Jammu and under the supervision of Prof. S.K. Gupta, Director Extension, has conducted successful demonstrations on Millets. The programme was attended by more than fifty farmers from the different villages at KVK Samba.

At the onset, Dr. Sanjay Khajuria, Chief Scientist & Head welcomed the participants and apprised them about the activities of the KVK Samba. He gave an insight into the importance of millet crops like pearl millet, sorghum millet, little millet, foxtail millet, barnyard millets in our daily diet and their role in maintaining the soil health and fertility. Further, he emphasized upon the advantages of growing millet crops in kandi region of Samba district and their suitability in rainfed areas of the district. He apprised the farming community about the health benefits of these crops and their demand thereof. GOI is celebrating 2023 as “International Year of Millets”, so the efforts of the KVK to promote the farming of the millets can be well understood.

Successful demonstrations of pearl millet, sorghum millet, little millet, foxtail millet, barnyard millets were conducted at KVK Samba and the harvesting of the same has been done now. KVK organized this programme to give a befitting tribute to the International Year of Millets and also create awareness among the farming community of the district.

The programme was attended by Dr. Neerja Sharma, Dr. Abhay Sinha, Dr. Vijay Kumar Sharma, Dr. Shalini Khajuria, Dr. Amit Mahajan.

At the end of the programme, a formal vote of thanks was presented by Dr. Shalini Khajuria.
