Commemorating the Writer Series held at Central University Of Jammu

JAMMU, January 20: To impart a holistic understanding of legendary writers and their literary acumen to students and scholars of the university, and to initiate an exploration of the contemporary relevance of their world-view, Department of English, CUJ initiated “Commemorating the Writer Series” in 2019.

Under the series, students, scholars, and faculty of the department commemorate a literary figure on their month of birth. Continuing this series, the students, scholars, and faculty of the department commemorated the remarkable legacy of the renowned social reformer and educationist Savitribai Phule. The event was organized with great enthusiasm amongst the young students of the department with the theme “Beti Bachao Beti Padhao” at the Brigadier Rajinder Singh Auditorium of the university. Savitribai Phule, born 3rd January 1831, is a trailblazer in women’s education, and social activism during 19th century in India.

On the occasion, the students performed a play on the life and legacy of Savitribai Phule, and celebrated her legacy, connecting it with the much celebrated and relevant campaign “Beti Bachao Beti Padhao”. The students and scholars of the department acknowledged Phule’s indomitable spirit and unwavering commitment to education with a series of poem recitations, presentations, speeches and a spectacular play depicting her inspirational life. The eventful celebration included a Gratitude Walk, where the students of the department dressed up as various women achievers as Phule’s Beti’.  

The event was convened by Dr Neena Gupta and was moderated by research scholar Komal. Speaking on the occasion, The HOD, Prof. Vandana Sharma complimented the synergized and productive effort of the students to learn beyond the classroom teaching, which has been the raison de-entree of the Commemorating the Writer series, which is one of the best practices of the Department evolving since 2019.
