CUJ Hosts Thought-Provoking Lecture on Cultural and Gender Studies

Jammu, 09Feb 2024: The Department of Tourism and Travel Management at Central University of Jammu, under the guidance of Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor Prof. Sanjeev Jain, recently hosted a distinguished lecture on “Understanding Research Issues in Cultural and Gender Studies” by Prof. Vijaylakshmi Brara from the Royal Global School of Humanities and Social Science, Royal Global University, Guwahati.

The event, part of the department’s eminent lecture series, commenced with a warm welcome address from Dr. Ranjeet Kumar Raman, Head of department, who introduced Prof. Brara as a multifaceted academician with significant contributions to gender and cultural studies.

Prof. Vijaylakshmi Brara delivered an enlightening discourse, delving into the fundamentals of feminism. She elucidated patriarchy as a mindset perpetuating male superiority, regardless of gender, and highlighted the societal normalization of stereotypes against women. Emphasizing women’s diverse capabilities and intellect, she advocated for portraying “Her Story” rather than the traditional “His Story.” Prof. Brara underscored the societal and cultural influences on behavior and advocated for deconstructing patriarchal structures, advocating for a more inclusive and humane society. To complement her lecture, Prof. Brara screened the short film “Juice,” reinforcing the message conveyed. The session became interactive during the Q&A segment, engaging faculty, students, and scholars from diverse departments.

Prof. Yashwant Singh, Registrar CUJ, in his address he shared insights into the university’s wide-ranging activities across various schools and departments, underscoring the lecture’s pertinence within the eminent lecture series.

 Prof. Jaya Bhasin, Dean of the School of Business Studies, offered insights into the lecture’s relevance within the context of Prof. Brara’s message, followed by a vote of thanks from Dr. Amit Gangotia. Dr. Bharti Gupta skillfully managed the proceedings as the master of ceremony.
