GDC Marh organises two day workshop on ‘Campus Bird Count’
JAMMU, FEBRUARY 16: NSS unit joined hands with Bird watching club of Government Degree College Marh organised two day workshop on ‘Campus Bird Count, here on the college campus.
The college is registered on e-bird world’s largest citizen Science Project. The programme was inaugurated by Chief Guest Prof Rakesh Kumar Koul (College Principal) along with Dr Parmil Kumar.
The workshop was conducted by Sachin Kumar Bhagat, Assistant Prof. in Political Science, a famous bird lover of Jammu and Kashmir under the overall supervision of Prof. Rakesh Kumar Koul Principal, GDC Marh who explained the mystic connection between birds and humans.
The invited speakers of the event Dr Parmil Kumar, HOD, Department of Statistics, University of Jammu and Dr. Pankaj Chandan,a wildlife biologist and an expert on Himalayan ecology inspired students to pursue higher studies in ornithology and also stressed on the importance of wetlands and birds species. They also highlighted the role of birds for conservation of humanity.
Dr Parmil Kumar No. 1 birder of J&K who has 482 bird species of J&K and 800 bird species of India to his credit and is a well-known bird reviewer of India donated reading material to the college for knowledge sharing among the students. He explained the importance of J&K for having 50% of birds found in India in comparison to the area of other states and shared that bird ROOK is the bird found in R S Pura jammu only in whole of India.
There was an interactive session between faculty, students and the invited speaker wherein the students raised various queries concerning birds and were replied satisfactorily. During the programme a photographic exhibition/ book exhibition showcasing birds of J&K along with equipments required for bird watching was also displayed.
The invited speakers were felicitated with Letter of Appreciation and Mementos. In the end, students shared their feedback and experience about the programme that how such type of programmes inspire, motivate them to connect with nature and choose their career. Refreshment was served to the participants.
Prof Anita Kumari, Prof Imtiaz Shahid, Prof Madhvi Parasher, Dr Ashu Jolly Prof Asha Kumari, Dr Balwinder Saini, Prof Shallu Gupta, Dr Shakun Sharma, Prof Anjana Chib, Dr Sheetal Devi, Ravi Kumar(Incharge Tourism club), were also present during the event.
