GDC Billawar Celebrate of World Environment Day
Government Degree College Billawar celebrated World Environment Day on 5th of June, 2024 with great enthusiasm under the patronage of worthy principal Prof. (Dr.) Alka Sharma. This year the theme of the day was “Land restoration, Desertification and Land Resilience”. On this occasion, a lecture and plantation drive were organized by the Department of Environmental Sciences in collaboration with NCC and NSS units of the college to create awareness among masses to protect the environment.
The lecture was delivered by Prof. Kiran Kumari, HoD, Department of Environmental Sciences on Land restoration and land resilience. Students participated enthusiastically in the event and various environmental issues like biodiversity loss, greenhouse effect, global warming, climate change were addressed focusing on land degradation and its restoration. Further, plantation drive was conducted and some of the plants which were planted were Delonix regia, Callistemon, Alstonia, Cassia fistula and some fruiting plants like mango, guava, Indian blackberry and other citric fruits.
Inaugural of Plant bank was also done with a motto to protect the environment as well as for a greener campus. Contribution by staff or students can be done in this bank for preservation and conservation of environment.
Prof. (Dr.) Alka Sharma, Principal, GDC Billawar, gave her remarkable words and addressed the students on importance of plants and how they can contribute in combating climate change. She advised the students to act as the ambassadors for spreading the awareness to take positive environmental action to protect nature with the motto “my environment, my responsibility”.
Lastly, vote of thanks was given by Mr. Akshay Sharma (ANO NCC). Other faculty members who were present during the event were, Prof. Kanchan Mala, Dr. Manu Sharma, Prof. Sunita Devi, Prof. Suneet Kumar and Prof. Sheetal.
