“Gender sensitivity is lacking in the country today”: BRS MLA KT Rama Rao

Hyderabad (Telangana) [India], August 16 (ANI): Bharat Rashtra Samiti (BRS) working president and MLA Kalvakuntla Taraka Rama Rao on Friday said that the rape and murder of a doctor at RG Kar Medical College Hospital in Kolkata has left the nation traumatized.

Speaking to ANI, Rao said, “The incident has traumatized the nation. It is not just Kolkata or West Bengal. Still, every single day, hundreds of incidents of sexual harassment, honour killing, molestation, rape, cruelty against women, physical violence and abuse are reported and have put all of us to shame. Gender sensitivity is something which is lacking in the country today.”

Further, he said that the country needs to come together as a society to evolve, raise issues and start talking and educating our boy children about how they would be thrown out of society if they commit any such crime.

“I am saying this as an Indian myself. I am not trying to politicize or point fingers at anyone here. My party, the country’s government and all of us need to come together as a society to evolve, raise issues and start talking and educating our boy children about how they would be thrown out of society if they commit any such crime. This will not happen in just one day, it will take time. We are the world’s largest democracy and we need to rise above this,” he added.

He continued that this incident is a poor reflection on the state of the society which needs to change.

“I would not be comfortable sending my daughter alone anywhere. This incident itself is a poor reflection on the state of the society and it needs to change,” Rao said.

Doctors and representatives of various medical organisations across the country have announced protests in solidarity with the rape and murder of the doctor.
