DDC emphasises on strengthening cooperative societies for better economic outcomes

SHOPIAN, NOVEMBER 19: The Department of Cooperative, Shopian today organised a function to commemorate the celebrations of 71st Cooperative Week at Town Hall Shopian.


The District Development Commissioner (DDC) Shopian, Mohammad Shahid Saleem Dar was chief guest on the occasion. He inspected the stalls of different departments, showcasing local products and displaying services and schemes within the department, in vogue for public welfare.


Speaking on the occasion, the DC assured that various measures shall be taken for the economic empowerment of people, especially in rural areas through the cooperative sector.


The celebrations were also marked with felicitation of cooperative society members for their exceptional services.


Earlier, Deputy Registrar, Cooperative, Shopian, Muzafer Ahmad presented the status of cooperative societies registered under Self Reliant Co-operative Act, 1999 and J&K Cooperative Societies Act, 1989 in the district and their business turnovers, employment generation and their role for strengthening local economy.


By promoting cooperative societies, the government aims to create a more inclusive and sustainable economic growth model, benefiting the majority of the population.


In Shopian, 153 societies are functional under the J&K Self Reliant Act, 1999 out of which 125 are dairy cooperatives with annual milk production of 3.5 M litres and employment of 1375 persons connected with it. Under the 1989 Act, 29 societies are functional in the district.


The department has diversified business activities and ventured into many arenas including health, cooperatives, fisheries, dairy, poultry, sale and services societies are some among them besides the basic primary agriculture cooperative, super bazars, central level cooperatives.


The officers of agri-allied departments along with employees of cooperatives, general public attended the function.
