Department of Environmental Sciences, University of Jammu organizes an expert talk on threats to birds of India

To ensure the protection of birds & their habitats, a lot is still needed to be done- Dr. Rahmani

JAMMU, March 02- Ace ornithologist and former Director of Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS), Dr. Asad R Rahmani delivered a presentation on the birds of India and deliberated in detail about the issues and concerns the birds face.

Dr. Rahmani said that India is a vast country manifested with different climate regimes and a vast array of habitats from subtropical forests to vast grasslands, mountainscapes and innumerable water bodies that offer permanent or transitory habitat to the birds that may be residential, local, or transboundary migrants.

India being a developing country has seen unprecedented infrastructural development that has an evident impact on the existence of different life forms, including plants, animals, birds, reptiles and even insects. ‘Though we offer substantial protection to our forests and waterbodies, a lot is still needed to be done to ensure the protection of birds and their habitats’, stressed Dr. Rahmani. The presentation was followed by a marathon interactive session wherein Dr. Rahmani cleared the doubts and concerns of the audience.

Earlier, Professor Piyush Malaviya, Head of the department welcomed Dr. Asad Rahmani and introduced him to the audience. Presented among others were Dr. Deepika Slathia, Dr. Neeraj Sharma, Dr. Pankaj Chandan, Dr. Meenakshi Khajuria, Dr. Dinesh Singh, Dr. Pankaj Chibber and scholars and students from the Department of Environmental Sciences.
