SMVDU Students Shine at Prestigious International Conference on Advanced Research in Civil Engineering

Third-year students Samaira Sinha and Rishabh Kumar of the School of Civil Engineering, Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University (SMVDU), achieved a remarkable milestone by presenting their cutting-edge research work at the 29th International Conference on Hydraulics, Water Resources, River, and Coastal Engineering.

The prestigious event, organized by the Ministry of Jal Shakti, Government of India, at the Central Water and Power Research Station (CWPRS), Pune.Their first research paper, titled “Modeling of Bridge Pier Scour Depth by Using HEC-RAS,” focused on using the state-of-the-art Hydrologic Engineering Center’s River Analysis System (HEC-RAS). This advanced tool, developed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, enables precise simulation of river hydraulics, sediment transport, and scour depth. The research addresses critical challenges in bridge design and maintenance, contributing to safer and more resilient infrastructure.

It is pertinent to mention that Samaira Sinha, Rishabh Kumar, and Subham Kumar Singh presented another paper titled “Discharge Estimation in Meandering Compound Channels using ETR and MARS Model.” This work integrated advanced data-driven models such as the ETR (Extreme Learning Machine) and MARS (Multivariate Adaptive Regression Splines) to improve discharge prediction in meandering river systems.

These innovative methodologies promise enhanced accuracy and efficiency in river flow management, supporting sustainable water resource utilization. The students’ participation at this international forum highlights SMVDU’s commitment to fostering academic excellence and innovation.

Prof. V. K. Dogra, Head of the School of Civil Engineering, expressed his pride in the students’ accomplishments, stating, “This is a significant achievement that showcases the talent and dedication of our young researchers. Their work not only contributes to the field of civil engineering but also brings global recognition to SMVDU.” The students’ groundbreaking contributions and participation in such a high-profile conference have not only brought laurels to SMVDU but also underline the importance of integrating technology and research for addressing critical challenges in water resource and infrastructure management.
