A pair of Lion coming from Gujrat to Jambu Zoo

JAMMU, NOVEMBER 7: Department of Wildlife Protection J&K UT is pleased to inform that under the direction of Lieutenant Governor Shri Manoj Sinha, one pair of Asiatic Lion being brought from Gujarat is expected to reach Jammu on Wednesday, 8 November 2023.

The pair of Asiatic Lion being brought from Gujarat is a endangered species as per the IUCN. Only 674 individuals exist in the wild which has increased from 227 in the year 1950 due to successful species conservation programme.

At present Asiatic Lion wild population is confined only to the state of Gujarat which has donated one pair of Lion to Jambu Zoo. The Lion pair brought to Jammu is adult individuals of 3.7 and 2.7 year old male and female respectively.

The pair will be housed in a dedicated Lion enclosure having a space of more than 5500 sqmt. as per the CZA norms with heating and ventilation facility for extreme weather condition. They will remain under quarantine for a weeks time and thereafter it will be released in the enclosure for public exhibition.

On this special day department thanks Lieutenant Governor and Government of Gujarat for the guidance and great encouragement in sourcing Lion which will bring joy to the people of J&K and Wildlife enthusiast.
