AIIMS Jammu Expands Horizons: Paediatric Surgeries Now Available for Infants and Children.

The health and well-being of a child are the cornerstones of a family’s happiness. When a child suffers from illness, it impacts not only the young one but the entire family. Parents endure sleepless nights, their hearts weighed down by worry and uncertainty. But when a child is treated successfully, it is as though the entire family is given a new lease on life. The joy of seeing their child return to a healthy, vibrant life is immeasurable, and the sense of relief it brings cannot be put into words.

The Executive Director & CEO of AIIMS Jammu, Prof (Dr) Shakti Kumar Gupta shared, “We recently had the privilege of performing three pediatric surgeries on children aged 11 months to under 18 years. These delicate procedures included a right orchidopexy for an 11-month-old infant and two corrective surgeries for congenital talipes equinovarus (CTEV), commonly known as clubfoot. Each surgery was performed with precision, care, and dedication by our expert team. Despite the complexity of these procedures, our team remained steadfast in their commitment to achieving the best possible outcomes for every young patient.”

He explained, “We treated a 1-year-old male infant with a right-sided undescended testis. After initial tests, we successfully performed surgery to move the testis into the scrotum. Timely surgery is key to preserving future function and preventing complications. The patient is now stable.”

For the other two surgeries, Prof. Gupta said, “This is a big step forward in improving pediatric orthopedic care at the hospital, helping children with conditions like DDH, angular deformities, and clubfoot, lead healthy, active lives. Early diagnosis and treatment are key, and parents should consult specialists for any orthopedic concerns. The Orthopaedics Department at AIIMS Jammu will provide all necessary specialized surgeries for children.”

These surgeries mark the beginning of a new chapter in the healthcare landscape of Jammu & Kashmir. With each successful procedure, we reaffirm our commitment to offering world-class medical care to the region’s youngest and most vulnerable patients. The ripple effect of these treatments will be felt not just within individual families, but across communities as we help to build a healthier future for the next generation.

The Director extended heartfelt congratulations to the entire team for successfully performing these important procedures. The skilled efforts of Dr. Vijay Kundal, Dr. Akshat Sudhanshu, and the dedicated Pediatric Surgery team, along with the support of the Anesthesia team led by Dr. Raksha Kundal, Dr. Sandeepika Dogra, Dr. Anu Hansa, and our exceptional nursing officers, Disha and Diksha, exemplify the commitment and excellence we strive for. The Director appreciated the efforts of Dr. Amit Thakur, Office In-Charge of the Orthopedic Department, for his continuous support in ensuring the smooth execution of the procedures. The Director recognized the exceptional work of the Orthopedic surgical team, including Dr. Rashid Anjum, Dr. Imran Sheikh, and Dr. Dheeraj, along with the Anesthesia team and the dedicated nursing staff.

He said, “Your hard work and collaboration serve as an inspiration to all, reminding us of the incredible impact we can make together in transforming healthcare and improving lives. Keep up the outstanding work!”

Through our efforts, we hope to transform the healthcare narrative in J&K, providing families with the confidence that their children can receive the highest standard of medical care right here, at home. This is just the beginning. AIIMS Jammu remains steadfast in its mission to enhance healthcare access, ensuring that every child has the chance to grow up healthy and every family has the joy of seeing their loved ones thrive.

The Director concluded, “When you educate a man, you educate an individual. But when you educate a woman, you educate a family. In a similar vein, when you heal one child, you bring new life and hope to an entire family. The impact of restoring a child’s health extends beyond that child alone—it enriches the lives of parents, siblings, and all who love them.”
