Awareness Programme on Education and Drug Abuse Prevention Held in Temisgam
Leh: April 25, 2025: A day-long awareness programme focused on strengthening school education and preventing drug abuse was organized today at the community hall of Temisgam. The initiative was a collaborative effort by LBA Sham Education Committee, LAHDC Leh, Information Department, Health Department, Education Department, and the villagers of Temisgam.

The awareness programme saw the presence of Councillor Tia-Temisgam LAHDC Leh, Tashi Tundup; Inspector General (Retd) SSB Tsering Dorjey; concerned officers/officials from the Health Department, Information Department, and Education Department; the Chairman and members of the LBA Sham Education Committee (SEC); villagers headed by the Nambardar of Temisgam village; parents; and a large number of students from Termisgam village.
Councillor Tia-Temisgam Constituency LAHDC Leh, Tashi Tundup, commended the organizing committee for conducting the day-long programme and expressed his gratitude to all the speakers, resource persons, and concerned departments for disseminating essential awareness in Temisgam village. He encouraged parents and members of society to take responsibility for safeguarding the students of the Sham area against harmful social practices.
Inspector General (Retd) SSB Tsering Dorjey elaborated on the significance of education, the pure and respectful relationship between teacher and student, the crucial role of parents, and the importance of maintaining a healthy mind, culture, and the ancient wisdom of Ladakh. He also emphasized the need for holistic education for children, encompassing not only academics but also involvement in sports, agricultural practices, and ethical and spiritual learning. He stated that engaging in constructive activities benefiting people, the land, and the country can help divert individuals from depression, bad habits, and any form of addiction.
Psychiatrist and Drug De-addiction Specialist at SNM Hospital Leh, Dr Tashi Tundup, provided a detailed overview of the drug abuse situation in Leh, initiatives to understand the nature of addiction, the importance of preventive measures against addictions, and recognizing and addressing mental health issues in a timely manner.
ENT Specialist Dr Norden Otzer delivered a comprehensive presentation on the adverse effects of junk food and the importance of promoting environmentally friendly and water-saving practices.
During the programme, two short children’s films produced by the Information Department on drug and substance abuse, titled ‘Trapped’ and ‘Echoes of Redemption,’ were screened. Speaking at the event, AE&CO Information Department Stanzin Wangmo emphasized the importance of making students aware of the severe effects of substance abuse. She also highlighted the significance of seeking support from family and friends during stressful times.
Throughout the day-long programme, Principal Govt. Higher Secondary School Temisgam, Sonam Yangskit; Chairperson LBA Sham Education Committee, Chosan Tundup; Member SEC, Dr Tsering Phuntsog; Nambardar Temisgam, Tsewang Dorjey; Lecturer GHSS Khaltse, Rigzin Namgyal; and other concerned resource persons spoke extensively on various issues related to education, drug abuse, and parenting.
