Birthday Special: Sujoy Ghosh weaves ‘Kahaanis’ with thrills
Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], May 20 (ANI): Bengali director Sujoy Ghosh has a penchant for thriller movies. Inspired by Hollywood or South Korean flicks, the director has come up with his own dish of desi suspense dramas. Interestingly, the director started his career in the Hindi film industry with the musical ‘Jhankaar Beats’ which turned out to be a hit.
But he is mostly remembered for the path-breaking ‘Kahaani’, which in a way changed the scenario of suspense dramas in the Hindi movie industry. Sujoy has also directed a Netflix series titled ‘Typewriter’. The director is busy with his upcoming project ‘The Devotion of Suspect X’, which stars Kareena Kapoor Khan, Vijay Varma and Jaideep Ahlawat. As the director rings in his birthday tomorrow, let’s revisit his journey through the movies over the decades.
Jhankaar Beats
The movie stars a bunch of actors namely Sanjay Suri, Rahul Bose, Juhi Chawla, Shayan Munshi, Sashikala, and Rinke Khanna. The movie is a tribute to the legendary composer R D Burman. Celebrating love, friendship and music, the movie is a fun riot of young people of different senses and sensibilities. The music of the movie contributed to its popularity.
Kahaani
In the treasure trove of innumerable characters in the Hindi film industry, Vidya Bagchi and Bob Biswas surely hold prized possessions. These two characters were part of Ghosh’s most commercially successful creation ‘Kahaani’. The Bengali cast and crew, the alleys of Kolkata, the yellow taxis and a bunch of secrets made up the world of Ghosh’s cinematic vision. The film won several awards, including three National Film Awards and five Filmfare Awards. The film was so popular, that it came up with a spin-off (Bob Biswas) and a spiritual sequel titled (Kahaani 2) later.
Ahalya
Ghosh loves to experiment with all forms of thrillers. His short film titled ‘Ahalya’ features Bengali veteran Soumitra Chatterjee, Radhika Apte and Tota Roy Chowdhury in lead roles. Taking inspiration from the epic Ramayana and the story of Ahalya, this short film is a modern retelling with a twist. The film garnered mixed responses, however, it initiated a conversation.
Badla
It’s a remake of the Spanish ‘The Invisible Guest’. Headlined by Amitabh Bachchan and Taapsee Pannu, the film brought out solid performances from the lead cast. The story follows an interview between a lawyer and a businesswoman, in which the latter insists that she is framed for the murder of her lover. The movie also stars Amrita Singh in pivotal role.
Typewriter
Typewriter is an horror drama television series, which stars Purab Kohli, Palomi Ghosh, Jisshu Sengupta and Sameer Kochhar in the lead roles. The series is set in Bardez township of Goa and revolves around a haunted house and a book that captures the imagination of a group of aspiring ghost hunters. Many critics called it a desi version of the series ‘Stranger Things’.
Sujoy’s next is also a remake work which also arouses curiosity among cinelovers.
