“Bold and unapologetic reclaiming of our civilisational roots”: Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma on passage of Waqf Bill

Guwahati (Assam) [India], April 3 (ANI): Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday welcomed the passage of the Waqf Amendment Bill 2025 in the Lok Sabha, calling it a bold and unapologetic reclaiming of India’s civilisational roots.

In a post on X, Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma said, “Yesterday in the Lok Sabha, Hon’ble Home Minister of India, Shri @AmitShah powerfully demonstrated the courage and resolute determination of a New India under the visionary leadership of Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri @narendramodi.”

“From the abrogation of Article 370, enactment of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), abolition of Triple Talaq, progress toward a Uniform Civil Code (UCC), to the recent amendment of the Waqf Act — this is a bold and unapologetic reclaiming of our civilisational roots. India is rising, rooted in its cultural confidence, and charting its course with clarity, courage, and conviction,” Assam CM said on X.

The Lok Sabha passed the Waqf Amendment Bill 2025 after a marathon and heated debate. While members of the INDIA bloc strongly opposed the legislation, the BJP and its allies supported it, arguing that it would bring transparency and enhance the efficiency of Waqf boards.

The House sat beyond midnight to pass the legislation. Speaker Om Birla later announced the division’s result. “Subject to correction, Ayes 288, Noes 232. The majority is in favour of the proposal,” he said.

The government introduced the revised bill after incorporating the recommendations of the Joint Parliamentary Committee, which examined the legislation introduced in August last year. The bill seeks to amend the Act of 1995 and improve the administration and management of waqf properties in India.

It aims to overcome the shortcomings of the previous act and enhance the efficiency of Waqf boards, improving the registration process and increasing the role of technology in managing waqf records.
