Central University of Jammu observes World Ozone Day 2024

JAMMU, SEPTEMBER 13, 2024 Under the patronship of Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor Prof. Sanjeev Jain, the Department of Environmental Sciences, Central University of Jammu, observed World Ozone Day 2024 in collaboration with J&K Pollution Control Committee (JKPCC), Indian National Young Academy of Science (INYAS) &EcoClub, Office of Dean Students’ Welfare, Central University of Jammu.

The Ozone Day celebration focussed on Montreal Protocol: Advancing Climate Actions. On this occasion, various events like quiz competition, poster making competition etc. were organized in Central University of Jammu and Kendriya Vidyalaya of the university. A technical symposium was also held, which brought together experts and scholars to discuss the ongoing and upcoming challenges posed by ozone layer depletion and its conservation. Prof. Gufran Beig [Sir Ashutosh Mukherjee Chair Professor, NIAS, Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru],in his keynote address spoke on the topic ‘Ozone for life: Discovery to Recovery’. Prof. Beiggot Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar award in 2006 for his seminal work on stratosphere-mesosphere structure and ozone column. Prof. Sunil Dhar(Chair & Dean, School of Life Sciences, CUJ) delivered an expert talk on ‘State of Himalayan climate: challenges and future perspectives’ and Dr.Ankit Tandon (Convener & Faculty, Environmental Sciences, CUJ) spoke on the topic ‘Ozone dynamics and climate change: current issues’.Chief Guest Sh. Vasu Yadav (IFS), Chairman, JKPCC shared various facts on Ozone for Life: 35 years of Global Cooperation” and encouraged students to be inquisitive on topics of national and international interest. Sh. Ghansham Singh (JKAS, Member secretary JKPCC), Ms.ShavetaJandial (Regional Director, JKPCC) and other JKPCC officials were also part of the symposium. Various representatives from industries joined the program. Prof. RituBakshi(Dean, Students’ welfare, CUJ) welcomed the gathering and Prof. Deepak Pathania (Chair & Dean, Research Studies, CUJ) delivered opening remarks.

Speaking on the occasion, Prof. Yashwant Singh, Registrar CUJ shared several milestones which CUJ has achieved over the time and also thanked Chairman JKPCC for the ongoing collaborations between CUJ and JKPCC. In the last session of the technical symposium, discussion took place for further strengthening collaborations between JKPCC and CUJ, where Prof. Vinay Kumar (Dean, Basic & Applied Sciences), Dr. Ashish Suri (Controller of Examinations), Dr. Uday Pratap Singh (Associate Dean, Academics), Dr. Ashok Yadav (Head, Dept. of Zoology), Dr. Neeta (Head, NSS), Dr. Naresh Sharma (Faculty, Marketing & Supply management), Ms. Shivali (Faculty, Educational Studies), Mr. Ajeet Kumar Sharma (Principal, KV) and Mr ArjinderKumar (KV) were also present. At the end, Dr. Shweta Yadav thanked Honourable Vice Chancellor Prof. Sanjeev Jain and Sh. Vasu Yadav, Chairman, JKPCC for all the support and motivation. She also thanked the Registrar, all Deans, Prof. Richa Kothari (Head, Environmental Sciences), Heads from other Departments and especially Principal, Teachers and students of KV for their contribution in the success of the event. She extended warm blessings and big thanks to all the  scholars and students who worked hard for organizing all the events in commemoration of World Ozone Day 2024. She also thanked the Indian National Young Academy of Science, INSA for all the support and cooperation.
