Cleanliness Drive organizes under Swachhata Hi Seva Campaign at Central University of Jammu
Jammu, September 27 : Central University of Jammu organized“Cleanliness Drive” as part of the nationwide “Swachhata Hi Seva 2024 (SHS-2024)” campaign, centered around the theme “Swabhav Swachhata, Sanskaar Swachhata.” This initiative involved NCC Cadets from 4 J&K Bn NCC, NSS Volunteers, and enthusiastic students from the university, highlighting that collective efforts can lead to cleaner societies and public spaces.The drive aimed to promote awareness about responsible waste management and the environmental impacts of neglecting cleanliness.
Participants covered extensive areas of the campus, including the Guest House, Canteen, Hostels, Academic Blocks, DDE Building, and the circular track. They identified the “Black Spots” (unauthorized areas where garbage is dumped regularly or areas that are most vulnerable regarding hygiene and sanitation). Approximately 50 kg of waste was collected and sorted into categories such as kitchen waste, plastic, paper, metal, and glass. Organic waste having the potential to be converted into compost was directed to compost pits. Over 75 participants from various university departments joined the effort, contributing to the goals of the “Swachh Bharat Mission” initiated in 2014.
The event was convened by Prof. Ritu Bakshi, Dean Student Welfare, Lt Dr. Pankaj Mehta, Organizing Secretary of SHS campaign 2024, ANO, 4 J&K Bn NCC, and Faculty of Department of Environmental Sciences, and Dr. Sujata Kundan, NSS Programme Coordinator, under the supervision of Prof. Richa Kothari, Nodal Officer for the SHS-2024 campaign.
Prof. Sanjeev Jain, Vice Chancellor, Central University of Jammu congratulated and praised the contributions of the NCC Cadets, NSS Volunteers, and students. He highlighted the importance of identifying these Black spots within the university premises and commended the enthusiastic efforts made to clean them.The initiative inspired students, scholars, staff, and volunteers to commit to environmental cleanliness and to adopt waste reduction practices in their daily routines.
