CUJ Hosts Debate on “Uniform Civil Code and its Relevance in India”

16th Aug 2023: The Dean Student welfare office and Dialecta Club, Central University of Jammu successfully organized a thought-provoking debate session on the topic “Uniform Civil Code (UCC) and its Relevance in India”. The event took place on the university campus with the co-ordination of Mr. Amritansh Bharti and saw enthusiastic participation from students.

The topic of the debate holds immense significance in the context of India’s diverse cultural and legal landscape. The event aimed to facilitate a constructive discourse on the advantages, challenges, and potential impacts of implementing a uniform civil code that would apply uniformly to all citizens of India, regardless of their religious affiliations.

The event witnessed compelling arguments and counter arguments from the participants, showcasing a thorough understanding of the various dimensions of the topic. Mr. Sooraj Sharma, a prominent voice in the discussion, expressed his views on the matter, stating, “UCC will provide social security for women irrespective of religion-based personal laws and also ensure equal opportunities for all categories in educational institutions, irrespective of minority acts. UCC will empower the unity and uniform activities of society as a nation.”

The participants engaged in a healthy exchange of ideas, discussing aspects such as gender equality, religious freedom, cultural diversity, and national integration. They addressed concerns related to preserving personal laws while striving for a more equitable and uniform legal framework.

The audience was treated to a well-rounded debate that highlighted the nuances of the topic and allowed for a comprehensive exploration of its implications. The insightful arguments put forth by the participants underscored the importance of balancing individual rights with the collective interests of a diverse society.

 Dr. Neena Gupta, the faculty convenor of the Dialectica Club, expressed her satisfaction with the event’s success. She noted, “Debate sessions like these provide students with a platform to enhance their critical thinking skills, engage in meaningful discussions, and broaden their perspectives on important societal issues.”
