DC calls for intensive vigilance on drug peddling, collaborative approach for tackling the menace

SHOPIAN, SEPTEMBER 28: The Deputy Commissioner (DC) Shopian, Mohammad Shahid Saleem Dar, who is also chairperson District Level Committee (DLC) under Narco Coordination Centre (NCORD) today chaired the monthly meeting with the concerned members at Mini Secretariat, here.


During the meeting, threadbare discussion was held on various issues related to incidence of drug addiction, declaration of Nasha Mukht Panchayats, computerised billing at Pharmacy shops and dispensing of scheduled drugs besides destruction of illicit poppy and wild bhung in the district.


At the outset, the DC was briefed by the departmental heads about work done during the ensuing year.


Additional SP, Showkat Ahmad apprised the that 49 cases under NDPS Act have been registered in the district, out of which 37 cases have been challaned, involving arrest of 56 persons and seizure of 06 properties during this year.


It was also revealed that destruction of wild bhung on 155 kanals was conducted along with destruction of 06 kanals of poppy cultivation through coordinated efforts of departments.


Panchayat, Drug, Social Welfare, Education and Excise department officers apprised about the declaration of Drug free Panchayats, vigilance on pharmacies, conducting of awareness, IEC activities and destruction of wild bhung and poppy in the district.


The DC sought the Action taken reports of all stakeholders departments and measures taken to control the drug menace and destruction of illicit poppy and cannabis in the district.


The DC stressed on intensified crack downs on the drug peddling and rehabilitation of victims along with intensive awareness, sensitisation camps in schools and colleges, organising student competitions and other outreach activities in order to create awareness among the masses.


He also sought strict vigilance on pharmacies dispensing scheduled drugs by conducting regular inspections in the district.


He called upon all to work in a coordinated manner, and sought active cooperation of local communities in combating the menace.


The meeting also discussed the role of police, Social Welfare, Education, Health and other departments for drug demand reduction strategies, rehabilitation and mental health counseling.


The meeting was also attended by ADC, Dr.Zakir Hussain Faaz; ACR, SDM, DIO, CMO, CEO, Tehsildars, SHOs and other officers.
