Department of Law, University of Jammu Organises Debate on Same-Sex Marriage
JAMMU, May 17: The Department of Law at the University of Jammu organized the Intra Department Debate Competition for LL. B Students on the topic “In the opinion of the house Same-sex marriage should be allowed in India” in the Moot Court Hall of the Department of Law. The debate provided a platform for students of LL.B (3 Years course) to engage in a meaningful dialogue on the various aspects of same-sex marriage.
Prof. Satinder Kumar, Dean and HoD, Department of Law, University of Jammu delivered a welcome address and highlighted the various initiatives taken by the Department for the academic and intellectual growth of the Department.
The debate competition was judged by Prof. Dipankersen Gupta of Department of Economics, Dr. Garima Gupta, HoD Journalism and Mass Communication and Dr. Jasleen Kaur of Department of Distance and Online Education. Total 25 students registered and participated in the debate competition,
Prof. Sanjay Gupta announced the results of the Debate Competition and highlighted the importance of debating skills for budding advocates. Through this debate competition, the Department of Law, University of Jammu, seeks to encourage critical thinking, promote understanding, and foster a respectful environment for the exploration of different viewpoints. The event provided a unique opportunity for participants to hone their oratory skills, showcase their research capabilities, and contribute to the ongoing discourse surrounding same-sex marriage. Ms. Aditi Thakur (LL.B 5th Sem) stood first, Mr. Akhil DK Singh (LL.B 5th Sem) stood 2nd, Ms. Ezza Shah (LL.B 3rd Sem) stood 3rd and Ms. Dravin Mahajan and Mr. Anikhet (LL.B 1st Sem) received special mention.
The debate addresses several pertinent questions, including the legal, ethical, and societal implications of recognizing same-sex marriage. Participants delved into topics such as equal rights, constitutional validity, social acceptance, and the impact on traditional notions of marriage and family.
Dr. Raj K Sandhu acted as the faculty coordinator for the debate and the organizing committee included Sunny Singh, Anuj Sharma, Toiba Andleeb, Habib-ur-Rehman, Ketan Kumar
