GCW Gandhi Nagar organises One day Workshop on “Drug addiction among youth in Jammu and Kashmir”
Department of Sociology, PSPS GCW Gandhi nagar, Jammu in collaboration with 92.7 big FM organised an event with the theme “Unfollow Drugs”. This initiative has been started by 92.7 Big FM. Prof. Minu Mahajan, Principal PSPS GCW Gandhi nagar, congratulated the Department of Sociology for organising such events on current social issues like drug addiction which is a challenge to the whole society. Dr. Juhie Mohan, RJ, 92.7 Big FM briefed the gathering about this initiative. She highlighted the current scenario of drug addiction in J&K. Dr Manu Arora, Professor & HOD, Government Psychiatric Disease Hospital, GMC Jammu highlighted the consequences of drug addiction on individual, family and society as a whole.
He stressed on the importance of saying ‘NO’ by the youth. Ms. Palvi, Director Programs JKSPYM, highlighted the role of de-addiction and rehabilitation centres in bringing the addict back into normal life. She stated that keeping in view the increasing no. of female addicts, the Government has also planned to open the rehabilitation centres for females in every state of the country.
Dr. Suraj Mohani Jamwal, HOD, Sociology quoted the recent figures along with some case studies where she highlighted how the social and moral fabric of society is endangered by the current drug abuse. It is reported that around 10%of the youth in J&K is involved in drug addiction which include majority in the age group of 17-33 years. The number of females are also increasing with the changing socio-cultural structure.
There is need of strict parental vigilance, role of educational institutions and the collective community approach to curb this menace. Around 48 students attended the whole event. During the interactive session, the speakers also answered the various queries raised by the students. Prof. Poonam Kesar and Dr.Shelly Sabharwal, Department of Sociology organised the whole event.
