GDC Nubra observes Bhoti Language Day
Leh, April 01: The Seminar and Debate Committee of Government Degree College (GDC), Nubra observed Bhoti Language Day at GDC, Nubra campus today.
Principal GDC Nubra, Dr Tsewang Motup spoke about the importance of Bhoti language and he informed that the Bhoti language is spoken across a vast region of the Trans Himalaya from Baltistan, Ladakh to the far east of Tawang district of Arunachal Pradesh, besides Pakistan, Tibet, Bhutan and Nepal.
The Bhoti script ‘Yige’, he mentioned, was invented in the 7th century AD by Thonmi Sambhotta under the guidance and sponsorship of the then King of Tibet sRongtsen sGampo. He stressed how one’s language represents one’s culture and identity. Hence Bhoti represents, according to him, the rich cultural identity and heritage of the people of Ladakh. He stressed how a particular language should not be associated with any religion. He also highlighted the scope of the Bhoti language and how important it is for us to ensure Bhoti is included in the 8th schedule of the Indian Constitution.
Further, he lamented that the younger generations are constantly getting alienated from the Bhoti language, which he reiterated is very unfortunate. He advised the students to use this language in all possible ways in their daily life to preserve and promote it.
Extempore speech on the theme ‘Importance of celebrating Bhoti Language Day’ was given by students of different semesters.
The video of MP, Ladakh Jamyang Tsering Namgyal made especially for this occasion was also screened at the event to spread awareness amongst the staff and students of college about the importance of Bhoti Language.
The programme was attended by both students and faculty of GDC Nubra.
