Green Rakhi Celebrated at Department of Botany, Jammu  University

Jammu, August 31: To express love, care, and unity with the environment, Department of Botany, University of Jammu organized a distinctive event on the occasion of ‘RakshaBandhan’ during which students, research scholars, and faculty members came together to tie traditional protective threads known as ‘Rakhis’ toplants. This symbolic gesture extended to various important medicinal plants such as the sacred Tulsi, historic Magnolia, Chinar, Sandalwood, Rudraaksh, Mahua, Putranjiva, Peepal, Chandani, Sita-Ashok.

As the participants tied the Rakhis, they also made a commitment to safeguard and preserve nature and its resources, acknowledging the urgency of addressing climate change for a healthier future.While tying the Rakhi to a temperate plant-Chinar tree presently growing in the Botanical garden, Prof. VeenuKaul, Head of the Department of Botany, expressed her enthusiasm towards the safeguard of plants and wished for luxuriant growth of the species in the Botanical Garden. She briefed the students that many societal festivals inherently connect humanity with nature.

The sustenance of life on our planet is owed to plants, which serve as the fundamental wellspring of essentials,therefore, their significance should be acknowledged throughout our journey of life.Further, Dr. Harish Chander Dutt emphasized upon the traditional activities of tribal people in sustainable use of forest resources. He also stressed upon the recent discovery of plant sensors which help them in sensing different positive and negative energies from the surroundings and their respective responses. Among those in attendance were Dr. Geeta, Dr. Skarma, Dr. Romica, Dr. Sapna, Dr. Sajan Thakur, Mr. Nitan along with research scholars, MSc students, non-teaching staff, and the gardening team of the Department.
