International Day for Persons with Disabilities Observed in Kishtwar
Extraordinary Journey of Ace Para archer Sheetal Devi inspires participants at Commemorative Event
KISHTWAR, December 03: The Social Welfare Department Kishtwar, in conjunction with the District Administration Kishtwar, Health Department, and Education Department today orchestrated a momentous program in the Conference Hall of DC Office Complex Kishtwar, commemorating the International Day of Persons with Disabilities.
The event was inaugurated by Additional District Development Commissioner Kishtwar, Sham Lal, in the presence of DSWO Zubair Ahmed Lone, CEO Prehlad Bhagat, CMO Dr. M Y Mir, along with participants encompassing persons with disabilities and others.
This year’s theme, “United in action to rescue and achieve the SDGs for, with, and by persons with disabilities,” underscores the call for inclusive action and solidarity in pursuit of Sustainable Development Goals.
Addressing the gathering, ADDC emphasized the government’s unwavering commitment to the welfare of individuals with disabilities, citing the compelling journey of Sheetal Devi, the 16-year-old armless archer from Kishtwar, who has ascended to the pinnacle of her sport, showcasing unparalleled determination despite her in born difficulties.
In his address, the ADDC highlighted the inclusive approach of government underscored by the implementation of ramp facilities at polling stations and schools, ensuring unimpeded participation of specially abled persons in civic duties like voting and education.
Other Speakers also highlighted different governmental initiatives, including financial aid, free education, medical treatment, vocational programs, and distribution of motorized tricycles, intended to empower and uplift the lives of differently-abled individuals.
The District Social Welfare Office urged the specially-abled to avail themselves of these benefits.
Meanwhile the CEO underscored ongoing efforts to enable educational and socio-economic empowerment of PwDs.
The programme also included the screening of inspiring films and the showcasing of the cultural performances and extraordinary talent by the students and persons with special abilities.
The programme culminated with the felicitation of specially-abled individuals/students by the ADDC, acknowledging their resilience and contributions.
