‘International Girl Child Day’ observed at Shopian

Girls are the future leaders & change-makers, invest in their potential: DC


SHOPIAN, OCTOBER 11: ‘International Day of the Girl Child’ was observed today by the Social Welfare and Education Departments at Government Degree College (GDC) Shopian in an endeavour to celebrate girls’ achievements and create awareness for their upliftment.


The function was presided over by the Deputy Commissioner (DC) Shopian, Mohammad Shahid Saleem Dar.


Empowering girls is empowering the world, every girl deserves education, equality, and opportunities, DC said while emphasising on the importance of the girls’ right to education and access to quality learning.


The DC also highlighted the importance of the celebration of the day and role of the empowered women for shaping the civilised and developed communities and elaborated on the need for investing in their potential to make them future leaders and change makers.


Various speakers deliberated on different issues confronting the women in the society and advocated for girls’ rights and protection from violence, abuse, and discrimination, encouraging girls’ participation in leadership, supporting girls’ health, reproductive rights and challenging gender stereotypes and societal norms.


On the occasion, girl students who excelled in different fields of academics and activities were felicitated with awards and mementos by the Deputy Commissioner and other officers and their achievements were celebrated with fervour and positivity.


The function was attended by ADC, Dr. Zakir Hussain Faaz; CEO, Shabir Ahmad; DSWO, Ibrar Mirza, and other officers and officials of the Education and Social Welfare department and scores of students, parents and citizens.
