International Year of Camelids celebrated at Nubra

Nubra, September 9,2024: Celebrating the International Year of Camelids 2024, felicitation of double humped camel farmers was organised at Deskit, Nubra, today on September 9 by ICAR-National Bureau of Animal Genetic Resources Karnal in collaboration with Department of Animal Husbandry Leh.

Deputy Director General ICAR-Animal Science Dr Raghvendra Bhatta, Director NBAGR Karnal Dr BP Mishra, Director Animal Husbandry and Fisheries Dr Mohd Ismail, Col. SS Bhardwaj from DIHAR, Chief Animal Husbandry Officer Leh Dr Mohd Ibrahim, Technical Officer Director Dr Tsewang Dorje, Block Veterinary Officer Nubra Dr Zadon and officials of Animal Husbandry, SDM office and camel herders of Nubra attended the programme.

The theme of the programme was ‘Heroes of Deserts and Highlands: Nourishing People and Culture’. During the programme, more than 50 double humped camel owners were felicitated by the Dr Bhatta DDG Animal Science. While felicitating the camel owners, he emphasized on identifying new avenues for camel, apart of tourism. He added that animal products from the region can be sent for Geographical Indication.

Director NBAGR Dr BP Mishra, congratulated all the owners of double humped camel during the occasion. He informed that NBAGR is working in the region for last 15 years and documenting all precious animal genetic resources from the high-altitude region of Ladakh. In addition, the guests also focused on addressing the issues of inbreeding of double humped camel in the area which will be addressed by importing good germplasm.
