IPR Cell, JU in collaboration with School of Biotechnology holds a thematic Lecture on “Managing Intellectual Property Rights and Innovations”
Jammu, October 13: Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) Cell, University of Jammu organized thematic lecture on ” Managing Intellectual Property Rights and Innovations” in collaboration with School of Biotechnology, University of Jammu.
Dr. Muqbil Burhan, Associate Professor, Business Policy, Strategy and Entrepreneurship, Chairperson, IIM Jammu’s Srinagar Campus and Chairperson, Center for Entrepreneurship, Innovation and Skill Development at IIMJ Srinagar campus and an illustrious alumnus of the School of Biotechnology, University of Jammu, graced the occasion as the distinguished speaker.
The formal welcome address was presented by Prof. Sanjana Kaul, Director, School of Biotechnology, University of Jammu, who took immense pride in highlighting Dr. Burhan’s alumni status within the school. She emphasized how his journey could serve as an inspiration and guiding beacon for present students, showcasing the heights that can be achieved through dedication and hardwork.
Prof. B.K. Bajaj, the Convener of the IPR Cell, University of Jammu, set the tone by illuminating the essence of IPR, emphasizing it as a shield for intellectual property generated through human intellect. Prof. Bajaj underscored the instrumental role of scientific advancements and innovations in propelling societal progress. He further introduced the distinguished speaker for the day, Dr. Muqbil Burhan, and proudly highlighted that teachers always find immense gratification when their students surpass them, showcasing the evolving excellence within the academic community.
Dr. Muqbil Burhan, commenced his address by elucidating the distinction between innovation and invention. He emphasized the crucial business cycle of creating a product or service with commercial value, followed by the imperative of recapturing that value, achieved through the establishment of a price. In this context, Dr. Burhan underlined how IPR serves as a safeguard for recouping this value. The speaker elaborated on the expansive scope of IPR, encompassing various domains such as patents, trademarks, GI tags, and copyrights. He particularly drew attention to the protection of traditional knowledge, illustrating this with the example of turmeric, which was previously patented by the U.S. and subsequently had its patent revoked. In his comprehensive discourse, Dr. Burhan illuminated the intricacies of copyrights, comprising two essential components: moral rights and commercial rights. He highlighted that while commercial rights are transferable, moral rights are not. To elucidate the patent filing process, Dr. Burhan employed a relatable example, demonstrating the stages and requisite claims involved in filing a patent. He further expounded on effective strategies for patent searching, offering insights into the platforms best suited for this purpose.
In his concluding remarks, Dr. Burhan underlined the transformative potential of hard work, dedication, and discipline. He ignited a fire of motivation within the students, emphasizing that the entire world eagerly awaits their contributions.
