Jammu student, Swstik Sharma, excels in National Meterological Olympiad

Jammu, 17 January. A Jammu student of 8th class, Swstik Sharma, has excelled in the recently held National Meterological Olympiad that was held across the country to celebrate 150 years of the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

Swstik is a student of the PM Shri Kendriya Vidyalaya, Sunjwan Military Station, Jammu.

He received the award from Dr. Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, Director General of Meteorology, India Meteorological Department, Government of India, at a function in New Delhi.

The Met-Olympiad aimed to foster enthusiasm and awareness about weather and climate sciences among young students across the nation. This competition provided an opportunity for students to test their knowledge, participate in engaging challenges, and learn more about the science of meteorology.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi participated in the celebrations of the 150th Foundation Day of India Meteorological Department (IMD) and also delivered his address at the Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi. 

Prime Minister also released the IMD Vision-2047 document for weather resilience and climate change adaptation. It includes plans for weather forecasting, weather management, and climate change mitigation.

Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh was present. Professor Celeste Saulo, Secretary-General of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) also came to attended the function.

Officials from Pakistan, Afghanistan, Myanmar, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Maldives, Sri Lanka, and Nepal were invited to join the celebrations. Representatives from the Middle East and Southwest Asia were also invited.

Swstik is the son of Dr. Gautam Sharma and Dr. Meenakshi Sharma. Dr. Gautam is Dental Surgeon in the University of Jammu and Dr Meenakshi is CMO in ESIC Hospital, Bari Brahmana, Jammu.

He is among the 3 students from Jammu and Kashmir to excel in the national level competition. He secured second position.

This was the first time that such an olympiad was organised across India by the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
As part of the 150th Foundation Day celebrations, IMD conducted the National Meteorological Olympiad (Met-Olympiad) in association with the South Asian Meteorological Association (SAMA) and the Indian Meteorological Society (IMS).

The Olympiad targeted students from classes 8th, 9th, and 11th, and was conducted at state and national levels.
Three state winners from every state and union territory (UT), as well as the national winner, were recognized for their accomplishments.

The winners also got the opportunity to participate in a one-day workshop and the 150th Foundation Day celebrations of IMD at New Delhi in the presence of esteemed dignitaries.
