Jammu University celebrates 77th Independence Day, VC hoists Tricolour
JAMMU AUGUST 15: Extending warm greetings on the 77th Independence Day, Vice Chancellor, University of Jammu Prof Umesh Rai today saluted the valour, vision, steadfastness and supreme sacrifices of the freedom fighters, which enabled the compatriots to enjoy the much sought after freedom.
“Nation will always remain indebted to the supreme contribution of the freedom fighters”, Prof Rai said after hoisting the Tricolour at an impressive function, filled with enthusiasm and patriotic fervour, in the main University Campus this morning.
The Vice Chancellor called for abiding by the Panch Pran, saying this resolve is imperative for achieving the goal of developed and resurgent India with focus on promoting the country’s glorious heritage and legacy. Shunning slavery mindset is key to steering this great nation into becoming Vishwaguru, he added.
Prof Rai also stressed the need for strengthening unity and amity in the true spirit of nationalism, saying that nation first is the guiding principle for compatriots.
Dwelling upon various milestones achieved by the University of Jammu, the Vice Chancellor highlighted some of the path breaking initiatives like ‘Design Your Degree’, ‘College on Wheels’, saying these are going to elevate the academic landscape of the region. He expressed gratitude to Lieutenant Governor Mr Manoj Sinha, who is also Chancellor of the University, for approving grants of Rs 3 Crores for the College on Wheels programme, of which Rs 1.50 Crore have already been released. This programme will benefit 500 to 800 girl students of various varsities of the Union Territory including the University of Jammu.
Referring to the presentation of a variety programme on patriotic themes by the wards of University employees and students of the University, he lauded their brilliant performance.
The Vice Chancellor released balloons at the Fountain Plaza to mark the celebrations. He also congratulated Dean Students Welfare and his entire team for organizing such a wonderful programme.
Earlier in his welcome address, Dean Students Welfare, Prof. Prakash Antahal informed about the initiatives taken by the University in connection with the celebrations of 77th Independence Day. He also informed about the new ventures of the Department of Students Welfare which are being organized to benefit all the stakeholders of the university
A sizable gathering of teaching faculty, officers, staff, students and scholars of University of Jammu participated in the function.
Prominent among those who attended the Flag Hoisting Ceremony included Prof. Anju Bhasin (Dean Academic Affairs), Prof. Rajni Kant (Dean Research Studies), Prof. Meena Sharma (Dean Planning), Prof. Rahul Gupta (Registrar), Prof. Rajeev Rattan Sharma, (Director CDC), Prof. Arvind Jasrotia , former Registrar, Prof Monika Sethi (Chairperson Campus Cultural Committee), Prof. Sarika Manhas (Co-Chairperson Campus Cultural Committee), Sh. Sanjeev Mahajan, CoE, Deans, Rectors, Directors, members of Campus Cultural Committee, representatives of the elected bodies of the University.
On the occasion, the Guard of Honour was presented to the Vice Chancellor by the University Security Contingent led by Capt. S.R. Dubey.
Those who presented colourful cultural items included Kavya Jandyal, Jhanvi Salaria, Ishanvi Salaria, Vanshaj Sharma, Varchasva Sharma, Yakshita Singh, Khushi Verma, Nazia, Urvashi, Ruqayat, Akshita Majotra, Bhavya Majotra, Medhansh, Amira Manhas and Aman Sharma. Prof. Monika Sethi presented the vote of thanks and the programme was conducted by Sumeet Sharma.
The whole event was organized under the stewardship of Prof. Prakash Antahal and was monitored by Prof. Monika Sethi, Dr. Sarika Manhas, Dr. Pritam Singh (Associate Dean SW), Dr. Garima Gupta (Assistant Dean SW), Dr. Shallu Sharma and Dr. A. R. Manhas (Dy. Proctors), Ms Mansi Mantoo (Media Officer) Mr. Sumeet Sharma (Drama Instructor) and Mr. R.S. Bandral (Sr. P.A. to DSW). The management was looked after by Kulbhushan Thakur, Balwant Singh, Arif Paul and Sachin Sharma.
