Jammu University takes first step towards inclusive society under G20
JAMMU February 7 An inclusive society is a society that overrides differences of race, gender, class, generation, and geography. It ensures inclusion, equality of opportunity as well as the capability of all members of the society to determine an agreed set of social institutions that govern social interaction. Civil 20 (C20) is an engagement group that comes under the umbrella of G20 groupings. Rambhau Mhalgi Prabodhini, a unique leadership development academy with an aim to nurture, and impart training, and capacity building of social workers, institutions, organizations, and start-ups; has been ably trusted to be the Secretariat for C20.
The C20 group works on the principles of global character, transparency, independence, collaboration, human rights, gender equality and women’s empowerment, inclusiveness, continuity, and predictability.
The HOD, Dept of Zoology, Dean Faculty of Life Sciences, Prof. Seema Langer, along with 60+ Faculty and research scholars and PG students came together in an online Chaupal.
The chapel was led by C-20 Working Committee Member and Director, of Inclusion at Connecting Dreams Foundation Dr. Simi Mishra to discuss the topic of Transgender Inclusion for Societal Development.
The chaupal was flagged off by Prof Seema Langer, addressing the gathering and emphasizing the role every member of the civil society to come together, make their own paths, find solutions and resolve issues through collective effort leading to peaceful, just and inclusive societies. Dr Simi highlighted the importance of India’s G20 presidency and C-20 India and that frank and open chaupals like this are a way to reach out and create a Jan Andolan. G20 is all about Jan Bhagidari, all about involving citizens of India. She explained C20’s logo with the tagline, ‘You are the Light’ that symbolizes the flame of hope, self-motivation and selfless services.TheSDG 16+ Working Group has identified four issues under these targets- peace, justice, anti-corruption, and civic space- as priorities for 2023. The Working Group will hold consultations for the Policy Briefs under each thematic issue. Using the transgender community as an example of excluded and disadvantaged community, Dr Mishra said that a majority of thetrans community is discriminated and made invisible in education and employment, families, and absence of adequate social and legal support mechanisms, create barriers to getting and holding jobs and to starting businesses. Aligned to SMILE Program by Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment, the Connecting Dream Foundations flagship program, ‘Transformation Career Progression Fellowship’ offers opportunities to learn key skills needed to become relevant in society and earn a livelihood and set up small entrepreneurial ventures.
The interactive session scaled several aspects of how to promote inclusivity ranging from how to introduces oneself using pronouns, how to create safe and inclusive spaces within the campus, counselling and support for parents. Through several stories of the Transformation Fellowship, she showed how a change could be brought out with the help of youth through skill building, job mainstreaming or entrepreneurship, re-emphasising the tag line ‘You are the Light’. These chaupal ignited the young minds and promised ongoing dialogue and collective action.
