JU organizes life skills workshop for differently abled students and scholars
JAMMU , March 04- A workshop on 21st-century essential life skills was organized today by the Disability Initiatives unit of University of Jammu. The workshop was an endeavour to help the differently abled students to develop skills that would help them deal with life challenges in a skilled manner. Prof. Rajni Dhingra, Former Dean Research Studies, Jammu University was the chief guest at the workshop.
While speaking on the occasion she applauded the activities undertaken for disability welfare by the University. She mentioned that all individuals have to look beyond their challenges and impediments, but rather should focus on their potential. She motivated the differently abled students to positively channelize their energies so that they can become contributing members of the society.
Dr. Chand Trehan, renowned Psychologist and RCI-certified Counselor was the resource person for the workshop. She stated that self-awareness and empathy are two core skills that all individuals including those with disabilities need to nurture. She also emphasized on the need of developing good communication, interpersonal and critical thinking skills.
She shared motivational videos with the participants and also quoted the life journeys of people who in spite of their disabilities were able to make a mark for themselves.
The entire workshop was conceptualized and organized by the Coordinator, Disability Initiatives, Jammu University Prof. Sarika Manhas. In her introductory remarks, she shared with the audience a brief report of the activities that have been carried out for the welfare of the differently abled by the Disability Initiatives unit. She exhorted upon the specially-abled students to realize their potential and capabilities. She mentioned that changing social contour necessitates that all students especially for with disabilities to constantly upgrade their skills and keep themselves relevant.
25 differently abled postgraduate students and research scholars belonging to the different departments /centres of Jammu University participated in the workshop. Faculty members and research scholars from the Department of Home Science, Jammu University namely, Dr. Arpana Langeh, Ms. Anu, Ms. Vinish Malik Ms. Insha, Ms. Meghna, and Ms. Mamta also attended the workshop.
