KVK Samba celebrates World Bee Day
SAMBA, MAY 20: Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Samba, celebrated “World Bee Day 2023” here at village Sadwal of Samba district under the aegis of Directorate of Extension, SKUAST-J and the supervision of Dr. Sanjay Khajuria, Chief scientist & Head, KVK Samba.
More than 80 farmers from different villages of district Samba actively participated in the programme.
Radhe Krishan, BDC Rajpura-the Chief Guest of the programme discussed in detail the importance of World Bee Day 2023 and Beekeeping for doubling farmers’ income. The focus of his discussion was increasing the production and productivity of honey and its bye products. He appreciated the team KVK Samba for reaching out to each and every nook and corner of the district. He congratulated Dr. Sanjay Khajuria, Chief scientist & Head, KVK Samba & whole team of KVK Samba for doing tireless work for the welfare of farming community of district Samba.
Earlier, the program was started by Dr. Sanjay Khajuria, Chief scientist & Head, KVK Samba with warm welcome of Guests and participants. He said that “World Bee Day” is celebrated on May 20 every year to raise awareness about the importance of bees and other pollinators and the observance of World Bee Day aims to promote actions that protect bees and their habitats, as well as highlight the significance of pollinators in maintaining biodiversity and ensuring global food security. He stressed upon the importance of Beekeeping in increasing the productivity of crops. He explained how Beekeeping can play an important role in doubling the farm income by adopting different means like value addition, marketing and grading of Honey. He also highlighted the initiatives taken by KVK Samba in promotion of Bee Keeping.
Dr. Saurav Gupta, Scientist Entomology of KVK, Samba highlighted the “World Bee Day” theme in 2023 is “Bee engaged in pollinator-friendly agricultural production”. He delivered an expert lecture on the role of beekeeping in increasing agricultural production and productivity. He also stressed upon the bee-keeping awareness and importance of bee derived products. He also described that every year this day enables us to raise awareness on the essential role bees and other pollinators play in keeping people and the planet healthy, and on the many challenges they face today. World Bee Day was started by the United Nations General Assembly so that bees’ conservation is highlighted for sustainable development. Dr. Saurav Gupta discussed the role of Beekeeping in improving the socio-economic status of the farmers. He also highlighted that packaging and marketing is playing a greater role in marketing of honey. Dr. Amit mahajan of KVK Samba advocated for adoption of bee keeping for uplifting of farmers income and livelihood
The proceedings of the programme were carried out by Dr Saurav Gupta. At the end of the programme, vote of thanks was extended by Bholanath, a progressive farmer of village Sadwal.
