Legal Metrology Department intensifies market inspections across J&K ahead of Holy Month of Ramadan
JAMMU, MARCH 1: Ahead of the holy month of Ramadan, the Legal Metrology Department J&K, under the supervision of Controller Legal Metrology Anuradha Gupta, has intensified market inspections across various districts to ensure compliance with the Legal Metrology Act and other regulations.

Enforcement teams conducted inspections in multiple locations including Jammu, Doda, Rajouri, Srinagar, Kulgam and Bandipora.
In Doda, a joint inspection was carried out in coordination with the district administration, covering around 40 traders. In Srinagar, LMD teams inspected Batmalloo and Tengpora areas, imposing and collecting penalties amounting to ₹6,000 from offenders on the spot. In Rajouri, inspections were conducted at various shops, including meat and poultry outlets, in collaboration with the district administration. One case was booked, and a composition sum of ₹1,000 was imposed. In Jammu, six cases were compounded, and a total fine of ₹8,000 was collected. Additionally, in Kulgam, a market inspection drive was conducted, leading to the registration of four cases against erring traders and a total composition sum of ₹6,500 was realised. In Bandipora, three cases were booked, and a composition sum of ₹1,500 was collected.
Controller Legal Metrology Anuradha Gupta reiterated the department’s commitment to safeguarding consumer rights and ensuring fair trade practices, particularly during Ramadan. She emphasized that traders must strictly adhere to the Legal Metrology Act and related regulations while selling essential commodities. Market inspections will continue in the coming days to curb malpractices and protect consumer interests.
