Mohali: Police seizes cash worth Rs 4.37 crore from two different locations in the city
Mohali (Punjab) [India], May 24 (ANI): Amid the Lok Sabha polls, the two different teams of Mohali Police seized cash worth Rs 4.37 crore from two different locations of the city, while patrolling the borders areas of Punjab-Chandigarh.
The cash worth Rs 4.37 crore is seized from the Nayagoan and Zirakpur areas of the city.
During patrolling at the Chandigarh-Mohali check post, the police team of Nayagoan Police Station intercepted a cash van and recovered Rs 1.41 crore (around one crore forty lakh 96 thousand rupees) from the cash van.
Upon interrogation, the individual in possession of the cash failed to provide a satisfactory explanation for carrying such a large amount.
Consequently, in response to his failed explanation, the income tax department was called to the scene, and after verifying the documents, they seized the cash.
Upon receiving further information from sources, another team of Mohali Police conducted a raid in the Zirakpur area of the city and recovered Rs 2.96 crore.
The entire matter is under investigation, and further details are awaited.
Notably, the elections on Chandigarh’s Lok Sabha seat and Punjab’s 13 Lok Sabha seats will take place in the seventh and final phase on June 1. The voting will take place on seats of Gurdaspur, Amritsar, Khadoor Sahib, Jalandhar, Hoshiarpur, Nandpur Sahib, Ludhiana, Fatehgarh Sahib, Faridkot, Firozpur, Bathinda, Sangrur, and Patiala and a lone seat of Chandigarh.
The first five phases of polling were held on April 19, April 26, May 7, May 13 and May 20.
The next two rounds of voting will be held on May 25 and June 1.
The 2024 Lok Sabha elections are being held in seven phases, in a six-week marathon running from April 19 to June 1. The counting and results will be announced on June 4.
