National workshop on bioinformatics at School of Biotechnology Concludes at Jammu university

JAMMU, January 30: Prof. Rajni Kant, Dean Research studies was chief guest and Prof. Seema langer Dean life sciences was the  guest of honour  at the valedictory function of 7 days  DST-SERB sponsored workshop organized by  School of Biotechnology in collaboration with HRDC and CITESM University of Jammu.

The workshop was held under Karyshalla scheme of  Accelerate Vigyan program of SERB to impart high end skills to researchers and faculty in the STEM area. Prof. Rajni Kant, Dean Research studies emphasized that the importance of a workshop on bioinformatics is quite evident by the fact that the national funding agency has sponsored it.

He further added that HRDC University of Jammu further augmented the funds for the skill improvement of young faculty in this important and recent field.

Prof. Manoj Kumar Dhar, formal Vice-chancellor University of Jammu, informed the audience that the School of Biotechnology was among one of the first Biotechnology Departments to start a course of bioinformatics. He conveyed his satisfaction that he is sure that the School will hold the flag of University of Jammu High.

Director School of Biotechnology, Prof B.K. Bajaj welcomed the guests and participants to the valedictory function and gave brief introduction to the School of Biotechnology, which is one of the premier biotechnology institutes in the country.

He appraised the gathering  that school was not only able to secure renewed funding from the department of Biotechnology after submitting fresh proposal for its masters program but faculty is doing cutting end research  in the latest areas of biotechnology.

He also added that School played a big role in covid management in Jammu by not only providing the instrument required for RT-PCR testing of the covid to GMC, Jammu but also the trained manpower to do the testing as researchers are trained in these high end technologies as routine.  

Prof. Jyoti Vakhlu the organizer of the workshop gave the report of the workshop. She said that it is matter of great satisfaction to the School that the current workshop meets international standards. The workshop was meant to add the value to research  of the researchers and faculty in various areas of life sciences and it has managed to achieved its goal.

She said that success of any workshop depends on three things, participants, resource person and infra structure and all the three were matchless in present workshop.

The proceedings of the workshop were recorded live and after processing will be put online for the benefit of the larger scientific community.

Prof. Seema langer congratulated the participants and organizers for the successful completion of the workshop. She urged the participants that they should share their skill and expertise  gained in this workshop with their lab mates, and keep practising the skill.  

Dr. Sheetal Ambardar proposed the formal vote of thanks. The proceeding of the valedictory function of the workshop were conducted by Ms. Nitika Sharma and the managed by Mr.Tahir Ali and Ms. Ritika Mansotra Ph.D research scholars of the School.
