New District Committee Holds Productive Meeting with Leaders and Residents of Nyoma Block
Nyoma, October 25, 2024: The New District Committee visited Nyoma Block on the third day of their tour. They engaged with leaders and residents from all the village within the subdivision of Nyoma at Nyoma Community Hall today.
The committee, which is assessing the establishment of five new districts in Ladakh, is chaired by Sh. Pramod Kumar Jain, IAS (Retd.), with members Sh. Kacho Asfandyar Khan, IAS (Retd.), Sh. Tsering Angchok, IAS (Retd.), and the Deputy Commissioner Leh Santosh Sukhadeve (ex-officio) and Deputy Commissioner Kargil Shrikant Balasaheb Suse (ex-officio).
During the meeting, local leaders and residents strongly advocated for establishing Nyoma as the New District Headquarter. They highlighted the historical significance of the region with a larger population and strategic location central to the Changthang region. A detailed memorandum outlining these points, signed by 28 local stakeholders was presented to the committee during the meeting.
Chairman Sh. Pramod Kumar Jain assured the community that their memorandum, views and feedback would be carefully considered.
Committee member Sh Tsering Angchok, IAS (Retd.), emphasized on the committee’s impartial approach in evaluating the needs and aspirations of the people. He also encouraged people of Changthang to prepare for opportunities a new district could bring. He also urged the locals to focus on skill development, particularly for young women and self-help groups, to leverage future opportunities in the district.
The committee’s visit follows the Ministry of Home Affairs’ “in-principle approval” for new districts in Ladakh, which includes Zanskar, Drass, Sham, Nubra, and Changthang. The meeting aim to gather local perspectives to enhance governance and service accessibility in remote areas.
Councillors, Nambardars, Ex Sarpanches, leaders, members and residents of Nyoma Subdivision took part in the meeting.
