No More Plastic Bottles in AIIMS Jammu – A Green Initiative Towards a Plastic-Free Campus
The All-India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Vijaypur, Jammu has taken a significant step towards environmental sustainability by imposing a complete ban on the use of plastic water bottles across its campus. This initiative is a part of the Institute’s ongoing efforts to promote eco-friendly practices and move towards becoming a plastic-free campus.
This bold move has commenced under the visionary leadership of Prof (Dr) Shakti Kumar Gupta, Executive Director & CEO, as part of the Swachhta Pakhwada celebrations. The decision is in alignment with key national initiatives of Hon’ble Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi. The Swachh Bharat Abhiyan and Mission LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment) advocates for conscious consumption, environmental awareness and sustainable lifestyle choices at both individual and institutional levels.
The initiative also resonates with the vision of Hon’ble Union Minister of Health & Family Welfare, Shri Jagat Prakash Nadda, who has consistently emphasized the integration of sustainability into healthcare governance. He strongly believes that “healthcare institutions must lead by example in promoting green practices, waste reduction and environmental awareness as part of a holistic approach to public health.” AIIMS Jammu’s initiative to eliminate plastic water bottles is a reflection of this broader policy vision.
Prof (Dr) Shakti Kumar Gupta said, “As healthcare professionals, we have a responsibility not only towards human health but also towards the health of our environment. This initiative is to foster a culture of sustainability within healthcare institutions.”
Dr Gupta added. that Col. Sanjay Garg, Deputy Director (Administration) AIIMS Jammu, will play a pivotal role in the implementation of this initiative across the Institute. His meticulous planning, supervision and coordination with various Departments will have a edge in ensuring timely execution and adoption of the initiative across all verticals. From logistics and procurement to sensitization drives among staff, his administrative leadership will build a cohesive movement towards sustainability.
The use of plastic water bottles has been prohibited across all areas of the campus, including all official meetings, conferences, workshops, CMEs, seminars and institutional events. This also includes all external visits, collaborations and programs conducted within the premises. To support this transition, AIIMS Jammu has introduced a variety of sustainable alternatives. Glass bottles will be used for official guests, while reusable steel and copper bottles are being encouraged for daily use by faculty, staff, and students. Water dispensers fitted with biodegradable cups will be installed in all meeting and common areas. In outdoor or traditional settings, the use of clay or earthen pots (matkas) will be promoted, combining environmental sensitivity with cultural heritage.
“This is not just an administrative measure—it is a call to action,” Dr. Gupta added. “It reflects our commitment to lead by example and create a model of sustainable healthcare administration.” With this major step, AIIMS Jammu emerges as a responsible and environmentally conscious Institute. The initiative reinforces the Institute’s broader mission—not only to deliver excellence in patient care, education and research—but also to execute environment sustainable practices in the healthcare sector.
AIIMS Jammu proudly joins the national movement towards a Swasth, Swachh, and Harit Bharat—a Healthier, Cleaner and Greener India.
