One Student One Tree” A green initiative by TBS Jammu University
JAMMU, 9th August, :The Business School, University of Jammu in its endeavour to build young value-driven future leaders has been organising various student engagement activities. In line with this, the Management Club of The Business School under its green initiatives organised a pledge ceremony and a lecture on “Plants and Life” along with a plantation drive. The theme of the event was “ One Student One Tree”.
The event started with a formal welcome address by Prof. Vinay Chauhan, Director, The Business School. While highlighting the theme of the event, Prof. Chauhan spoke about the importance of green and sustainable environment and quoted the famous saying by Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, “ Trees are my Guru, they continue to give unconditionally even when you pelt them with stones to take their fruits and even if you cut them down.” By this quote, he emphasized that we as humans must embody the selfless nature like plants.
Dr. Yash Pal Sharma, Professor of Botany and Rector Udhampur Campus, University of Jammu, was the resource person for the occasion. He talked about the evolution of plants and how they add value to our lives and Planet Earth. He highlighted the current environmental concerns and also emphasized on the role that we as individuals can play to conserve it. Prof. Sharma also shared his thoughts on how our world is getting super focused on technology and have developed a disconnect with Mother Nature. He mentioned that our society is moving towards “Plant Blindness” – a phenomena in which people are unable to recognize their native plants also. Further sharing his narrative he talked about how Mother Earth has created its own Constitution and tricolour and we must abide by it for a sustainable future.
The event further progressed with the Pledge taking ceremony on the theme “One Student One Tree”, followed by a plantation drive. Everyone promised to take care of the planted saplings and nurture them to grow into big trees. The drive witnessed the enthusiastic participation by faculty, students, scholars and staff, in which more than seventy saplings were planted in and around The Business School. The event concluded with a vote of thanks and presentation of mementos to the honourable guest. The event was coordinated by the MBA second semester students under the guidance of Dr. Shelleka Gupta, Coordinator Management Club.
