Pragya Kapoor’s takes a Powerful Initiative to Restore Elephanta Island’s Heritage

Pragya Kapoor’s Ek Saath Foundation has made a remarkable effort in restoring and preserving the historic heritage site of Elephanta Island. Originally known as Gharapuri, meaning “city of caves,” this ancient site features a series of rock-cut cave temples primarily dedicated to Lord Shiva. These intricately carved sculptures, dating back to the 6th and 7th centuries, stand as a testament to India’s rich cultural heritage. Sadly, many of these magnificent carvings were damaged in the 17th century when the Portuguese used them for target practice.

Recognizing the need for restoration, Pragya Kapoor recently took to Instagram to showcase the foundation’s collective efforts in preserving this cultural landmark. Their initiatives include recycling over 10,000 kg of waste, organizing nine cleanup drives since June that removed 500+ bags of marine litter, neutering 49 community dogs to promote a healthier ecosystem, and installing 58 dustbins, with 82 more on the way. Through these sustained efforts, the Ek Saath Foundation.

Ek Saath Foundation remains dedicated to preserving and restoring this invaluable cultural site, ensuring that future generations can appreciate its historical and artistic significance. With a mission of “One island, one mission: preserving our heritage,” this initiative is just the beginning of a long-term commitment to safeguarding India’s legacy.
