Samba: Intensive Crackdown against Mining Violations recovers record Fine of Rs 55 Lakh

SAMBA, December 21: In a resolute move to curb unauthorized mining activities and enforce strict adherence to regulations, the Samba Administration, in conjunction with the Mining Department and Police force, has intensified crackdown on violators in the District.

Over the past few months,  as many as 410 vehicles were impounded, and penalties were levied for a range of infringements in the Samba district.

3 FIRs stand registered and two more FIR have been recommended for different violations, while one Stone Crusher Unit was sealed for violating the norms.

The collective fines imposed for different violations related to extraction, storage, and transportation (from various sources: lease holders, crusher units & dumps) have amounted to a substantial sum of Rs 55 lakh.

Furthermore, an additional Rs 25 lakh penalty-notices have been issued, underscoring the concrete efforts undertaken to ensure compliance to the mining regulations.

Notwithstanding limited staff in the Department of Geology and Mining, the administration has successfully achieved a significant increase in revenue from both royalties and fines, surpassing the figures recorded in the preceding years. The remarkable accomplishment showcases the unwavering commitment and efficiency of the authorities in safeguarding mining protocols and preserving the integrity of the district’s resources.

Officers of the department said “The concerted efforts to clamp down on mining violations underscore the commitment of the department to uphold regulatory frameworks. The substantial increase in revenue reflects the dedication to ensuring responsible and lawful mining practices for the benefit of the district’s development and environmental sustainability.”

Special night squads and joint visits/ raids are being conducted from time to time.

The District Administration remains steadfast in its commitment to maintaining stringent vigilance over mining activities, fostering compliance, and preserving the region’s natural resources. These ongoing efforts are integral to fostering a sustainable and lawful mining environment in Samba District.

As the District Administration, Mining Department, and Police intensify efforts to combat unauthorized mining activities, the general public is earnestly encouraged to contribute actively in curbing this prevailing issue. Residents are urged to extend their support by promptly providing crucial information to their respective Tehsildars and Station House Officers (SHOs), who are integral members of the tehsil-level Multi-Departmental Task Force established by the government.

The Multi-Departmental Task Force, comprising Tehsildars and SHOs, has been mandated to oversee and address various aspects of mining violations within their respective jurisdictions. These officials are equipped and ready to receive and act upon timely inputs from vigilant citizens to effectively curb the menace of unauthorized mining activities.

By collaborating with the authorities and sharing vital information related to suspected violations or irregularities in mining practices, the public plays a pivotal role in fortifying the ongoing efforts to maintain the integrity of mining regulations in the region.

DC Samba and the Mining Officer emphasized the significance of public cooperation, stating, “The public involvement is instrumental in our collective efforts to combat illegal mining activities. We urge everyone to assist us by providing timely and credible information to the Tehsildars and SHOs, empowering us to take swift and necessary actions against any violation.”
