“Shah well aware of history”, Ravi Shankar Prasad after Amit Shah targets Nehru in parliament
New Delhi [India], December 13 (ANI): In response to Congress MP Rahul Gandhi’s remarks against Union Home Minister Amit Shah after the latter targeted former Prime Minister Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru during the debate on the two bills related to Jammu and Kashmir in Parliament, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Ravi Shankar Prasad said that Amit Shah is well aware of the history.
“If he is a big scholar in history, I want to ask a few questions to Rahul Gandhi. Why was there a ceasefire at the time when the Indian Army was pushing back the Pakistani troops? Why was Article 370 drafted? It was temporary. People from Congress were against it. Pandit Nehru would keep reiterating ‘Hindi Chini Bhai Bhai’, although China was preparing for a war against India. So definitely, questions would arise. Rahul Gandhi is the great grandson of Pandit Nehru, so he has an issue with it,” Prasad said while speaking to ANI.
“Union Home Minister Amit is well aware of the history. We all learn a lot from him. There is a lot of discussion in the country about Rahul Gandhi’s knowledge; I would not like to say anything about it,” he added.
During the debate on the two bills related to Jammu and Kashmir in Parliament, Amit Shah accused Nehru of “blunders.”.
Speaking in Rajya Sabha on Tuesday, the Home Minister said Nehru had “accepted his mistake” regarding the ceasefire during the war with Pakistan in 1948 and taking the Kashmir issue to the United Nations.
“After the experience of the United Nations, I have come to the conclusion that no satisfactory results can be expected from there. I considered the ceasefire decision a good one, but we could not deal with this matter well. We should have had more thoughts on the ceasefire and taken it late. These are the mistakes of the past,” the Home Minister quoted Nehru as saying.
“This quote is from Jawaharlal Nehru. Unko toh manoge ya nahi manoge ki unhone galti ki. (Will you accept this or not that he made a mistake?” Shah asked Congress members.
Meanwhile, taking a swipe at Union Home Minister Shah, Rahul Gandhi said that the former is not aware of the history.
Pandit Nehru gave his life for India; he was in jail for years. Amit Shah is unaware of history. I cannot expect him to know history; he has the habit of rewriting it,” Gandhi told reporters.
The Rajya Sabha passed unanimously on Monday the Jammu and Kashmir Reservation (Amendment) Bill, 2023, and the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill, 2023, with a voice vote amending key laws in the Union Territory aimed at providing “rights to those who faced injustice.”
The significant legislative move in Parliament’s Winter Session witnessed various opposition leaders raising issues to reinstate the statehood of the erstwhile state and announce elections there.
The Jammu and Kashmir Reservation (Amendment) Bill, 2023 and the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill, 2023 aimed at providing “rights to those who faced injustice” and were deprived of their rights in the Union Territory.
Both bills were passed by the Lok Sabha.
The bills were jointly discussed a few hours after the Supreme Court passed a judgement upholding the constitutional validity of the Executive Order abrogating Article 370 of the Constitution and scrapping statehood for Jammu and Kashmir.
