SMVDU Organizes Cultural event on Dogri Manyata Diwas
Katra, Dec 22: Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University (SMVDU) Katra today celebrated the 19th anniversary of inclusion of Dogri Language in the 8th Schedule as ‘Dogri Manyata Diwas’.
The programme started by lighting the traditional lamp, followed by presentation of Dogri music and poetic verses by students.
Prof. Vishav Murti Shastri, noted Sanskrit Scholar and Padamshree awardee while speaking on the occasion exhorted the people of Jammu region to put in all efforts to promote Dogri language, art & culture and preserve the Dogra heritage. “Dogri Represents our linguistic identity and we need to make it a part of curriculum from school to university level” he said.
Prof. Shiv Nirmohi noted scholar of dogri culture and Padamshree awardee hailed the contribution of Dogri poets and writers for the recognition of the dogri language. He emphasized the need for promoting Dogri language and literature among young generation through institutions of learning.
Prof. R K Sinha, Vice Chancellor SMVDU and Padamshree awardee while speaking on the occasion stressed the need for communicating in our mother tongue. “Unless and until we don’t respect our languages we won’t be able to respect our culture and civilization and nation “he said.
Prof. V K Bhat, Dean SoLL, SMVDU delivered the welcome address. He stressed on the importance of the Dogri language, and how youngsters are getting interested in the Dogri popular literature through social media.
The speakers emphasized the necessity of preserving Dogri language and urged dogri lovers to devote themselves to developing, promoting and popularizing the language by writing and producing quality literature in mother language. During the event the students were honoured for their contribution to languages.
A colourful cultural programme was organized at University Matrika Auditorium. The programme included ‘Dogri folk Songs’ and other performances attended by the faculty, staff and students.
On the occasion a documentary titled “Musicians of Mountains” showcasing the folk music, culture and traditions of Duggar region was released by the dignitaries followed by its display in the Matrika Auditorium. The documentary has been made by Gaurav Jamwal, under Board of Cultural activities and funded by the SMVDU.
The event was organised under the guidance of Dr Isha Malhotra HoD School of Languages and Literature and Dr. Anil Tiwari School of Philosophy and culture.
