Special sanitation drive under Swachh Bharat Abhiyan launched
Leh, May 25, 2024: Municipal Committee, Leh in collaboration with Ladakh Pollution Control Committee and World-Wide Fund, Ladakh launched a special sanitation drive under Swachh Bharat Abhiyan initiative on May 25.
The theme of the drive was ‘The Himalayan Cleanup’. The initiative will span for a period of 10 days starting from May 25 till June 5. Each of the first four days is dedicated to covering three wards daily. The three wards that have been covered today were Gangles Gompa,Chubi Sankar and Changspa.
The primary objective of the cleanliness campaign is to foster a clean environment within the Ladakh District and also to instill a sense of responsibility among its residents towards cleanliness.
Brij Mohan Sharma, Additional Principal, Chief Conservator of Forest Ladakh flagged off the cleanliness drive from Gangles Gonpa Leh which is the 1 ward. He emphasized the significance of cleanliness and highlighted the role of active citizen participation in maintaining a pristine environment. He also added that on June 5 which is the World Environment Day, all the 13 wards will undergo evaluation and will be given subsequent ranking based on their cleanliness levels. The cleanliness drive will be concluded by celebrating World Environment Day in Ladakh university Taru.
Vice President of Integrated Mountain Initiative, Jigmet Takpa pointed out how Ladakh is known for its breathtaking landscapes and why it is important to preserve the environment given the economy of Ladakh thrives on it.
District Officer, Ladakh Pollution Control Committee, Ruksana Parveen spoke about the main goal of the campaign which is to clean all the wards till June 5 in collaboration with the Pollution Control Committee Ladakh, Sustainable Development Forum, World Wide Fund, Tourism Department and Municipal Committee.
Participants include Executive Officer, Municipal Committee, Leh Stanzin Rabgais, Officers & Officials of Ladakh Pollution Control Committee, Municipal Committee, Leh, citizens & community members of concerned wards.
